If you enjoy birdwatching in southern California then you should definitely know about the Salton Sea. It’s California’s largest lake and it serves as an invaluable stop for migrating birds who travel along the Pacific flyway from the far North down into Latin America. Hundreds of different species of birds have been recorded here. It’s a pit stop for birds to rest and refuel as they make their journey down south, & that’s where the beauty of this peculiar place lies. Its a man made lake thats surrounded by agriculture & farming. There’s no constant flow of water coming in besides little run off water from the farms which also carries the chemicals used for farming. The salt & toxins in the water make it impossible for fish to live at times, especially during the summer heat when the temps reach 115 degrees. Dead fish surround the shores & the stench that goes with it. I’m no expert on the sea but you can find lots of info on the web about it & help fight to keep the sea here. If you are taking kids there, be sure to go to the visitor center. They have some taxidermy, history info on the sea , & coloring books for the kids. I will say when my love for the sea comes to life is at sunset. It’s really one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Birds flying everywhere, mountains in the distance with water seemingly at their feet…its breathtaking! Watch the sunset from The Yacht Club there..you wont regret it!
If you follow me on instagram then you may have seen why we made the trek down there. My girls & I are currently reading The Trumpet of the Swan, & it just so happened that a Trumpeter Swan made an appearance at the sea (which is rare). We also made a pit stop at Salvation Mountain. That’s been on my to-do list for awhile. The girls loved it there!! Here’s some photos & a little video i shot on my phone.
