Salton Sea & Salvation Mountain

If you enjoy birdwatching in southern California then you should definitely know about the Salton Sea. It’s California’s largest lake and it serves as an invaluable stop for migrating birds who travel along the Pacific flyway from the far North down into Latin America. Hundreds of different species of birds have been recorded here. It’s a pit stop for birds to rest and refuel as they make their journey down south, & that’s where the beauty of this peculiar place lies. Its a man made lake thats surrounded by agriculture & farming.  There’s no constant flow of water coming in besides little run off water from the farms which also carries the chemicals used for farming. The salt & toxins in the water  make it impossible for fish to live at times, especially during the summer heat when the temps reach 115 degrees. Dead fish surround the shores & the stench that goes with it. I’m no expert on the sea but you can find lots of info on the web about it & help fight to keep the sea here. If you are taking kids there, be sure to go to the visitor center. They have some taxidermy, history info on the sea , & coloring books for the kids. I will say when my love for the sea comes to life is at sunset. It’s really one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Birds flying everywhere, mountains in the distance with water seemingly at their feet…its breathtaking! Watch the sunset from The Yacht Club there..you wont regret it!

If you follow me on instagram  then you may have seen why we made the trek down there. My girls & I are currently reading The Trumpet of the Swan, & it just so happened that a Trumpeter Swan made an appearance at the sea (which is rare). We also made a pit stop at Salvation Mountain. That’s been on my to-do list for awhile. The girls loved it there!! Here’s some photos & a little video i shot on my phone.

  • Non stop I tell ya. We’ve been going & going & going…I’m a bit tired and super thankful for this day where I’m able to lounge around wearing smeared makeup from yesterday, waiting a little longer then normal to brush my teeth, and best of all I’m able to put my kids in head locks when they are bad since there’s no one around to see it. Thanks Wednesday for being so good to me ;)

Time out’s

There are some days when I’m forced to be in doors most the day, taking care of responsibilities.. psssh adult stuff :/ So by the end of the day I’m feeling like bird in a cage, escaping is the only thing on my mind. It doesn’t take much, just a few moments of fresh air & a beautiful sunset to gather myself & my thoughts. So I’ve decided on a new ritual for us. If we are home when the sun is getting ready to set …we will make time to head up the mountain and watch the sun go down. Every sunset is different & its a bit of a reminder to me…tomorrow is a new day, different from today, and full of possibilities. I always need to remind myself to take time out of the busy days and really focus and enjoy the simple things. Happy Thursday!!

Holiday, Birthday, Holiday, Birthday, Birthday

Yep, in that order. Thanksgiving, Lucy’s birthday, Christmas, Johnny’s Birthday, then Stella’s birthday. Woa. Im all about a party/get together so trust me, I’m not complaining. I’m thankful for this bunch & the way they stretch me & love me.

This past weekend we did a lot of driving. We went to one of our regular spots, Big Morongo National Preserve, & also made a trip to Parker Dam and Lake Havasu…chasing birds of course :) If your new to the Bovee’s ,the thing that gets us out to all these beautiful places is of course our love for adventure, but also that my husband is a bird watcher. We have yearly bird lists for the state, county, & a life lists of birds seen. That’s why you’ll always find my husband carrying that ginormous lens and binos in almost every picture of him haaah! So here’s some of the photos of this weekends journey.
